Motorists to comply with new heavy vehicle lane and compulsory stop on Kloof Nek Road

The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate would like to notify all road users that the heavy vehicle lane and compulsory stop along Kloof Nek Road is now in effect. All motorists are to note the changes and to please comply with the road rules in an attempt to decrease the number of heavy vehicle accidents on Kloof Nek Road along the downhill section heading into the city. The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas and Ward Councillor Francine Higham went out to Kloof Nek Road yesterday, 16 July 2026, to see the new heavy vehicle lane and compulsory stop that has been implemented.
The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate currently awaits the final approval for the implementation of a permanent camera to enforce the compulsory stop.
‘This intervention was presented to the public in September last year when the City of Cape Town asked residents to submit comments on the proposed stop to address the heavy vehicle accidents on Kloof Nek Road in the citybound direction. I want to explain to road users that the righthand lane will accommodate general traffic, while the lefthand lane will be reserved for heavy vehicles only, for approximately 250 metres. Heavy vehicle drivers are now required to adhere to the stop, engage low gear, and maintain low gear for the rest of the downhill section. We are eager and hopeful that these interventions will assist us in preventing the heavy vehicle crashes we have seen along Kloof Nek Road over the past few years and to keep Cape Town moving safely’, Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas
A note to all drivers of normal light motor vehicles:
- Drivers of normal light motor vehicles should merge into the right-hand lane ahead of the tapered lane markings and signage highlighting the commencement of the dedicated compulsory Heavy Vehicle (HV) lane.
- If light motor vehicle drivers remain in the left lane in error, they will be compelled to stop at the STOP control, even though they are not driving a heavy vehicle.
